Dhaka, June 28 (V7N) — Battery-powered rickshaws designed by BUET (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology) will soon begin operation in the capital, initially in the areas of Paltan, Dhanmondi, and Uttara, announced LGRD Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan on Saturday.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a driver training program at Nagar Bhaban of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
According to Bhuiyan, these battery-powered rickshaws will be strictly regulated. “There will be a specific number of rickshaws in each area, not indefinite like now. Arrangements will be made so that drivers do not fall victim to extortion or other forms of harassment. The entire licensing process for drivers and vehicles will be conducted online,” he said.
Citing road safety concerns, Bhuiyan pointed out that 32% of total road accidents during the last Eid involved auto-rickshaws, though the actual figure could be higher.
Speaking at the event, DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz announced that the new rickshaws will start operating on the streets from the beginning of August. He added that 100,000 auto-rickshaw drivers will be licensed through proper training. Work is also underway to set up designated charging points to ensure these rickshaws can be powered safely and efficiently.
The initiative aims to modernize Dhaka’s transport system, improve safety, and reduce harassment of drivers while promoting environmentally friendly vehicles.
