DHAKA, June 23 (V7N)– Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, Md. Riaz Hamidullah, today paid a courtesy call on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her office in "Nabanna" in Kolkata. The meeting, described as very warm and cordial, marked the first engagement between the newly appointed High Commissioner of Bangladesh and any Chief Minister of India.
During the discussions, Chief Minister Banerjee requested High Commissioner Hamidullah to convey her greetings to Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and to the people of Bangladesh, underscoring the strong and historic bonds between West Bengal and its neighboring nation.
Mamata Banerjee expressed her strong optimism for further strengthening the long-standing relations between the people of Bangladesh and West Bengal. She emphasized that the deep-rooted linguistic, cultural, and shared value-based connections transcend purely economic and commercial relations, forming a unique bond between the two Bengali-speaking regions.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed her commitment to maintaining continued engagement with Bangladesh in the days to come.
High Commissioner Hamidullah had presented his credentials to the President of India on May 29, before this significant meeting with Chief Minister Banerjee. This engagement comes amidst recent reports of discussions between Bangladesh and India on various bilateral issues, including border management and cultural cooperation. The deep cultural and linguistic ties between Bangladesh and West Bengal have historically served as a strong foundation for their relationship.
