Gazipur, June 12 (V7N) – Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated on Thursday that there is no barrier preventing Tarique Rahman from returning to Bangladesh. He can come back anytime if he wishes.
Speaking to reporters after visiting Salna Highway Police Station in Gazipur, the advisor addressed recent incidents of people being forcibly pushed across the border from India to Bangladesh. “They are being pushed forcibly from India and not sent through the proper legal process. We will certainly take back Bangladeshi citizens residing in India, but this must be done following the rules,” he said. He also confirmed that the issue has been communicated to the country’s High Commissioner.
Regarding the rise in COVID-19 infections, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury mentioned that awareness initiatives have been launched at various points, including airports and land ports, to prevent further spread. However, he emphasized that individual awareness is essential.
Tarique Rahman was acquitted of all charges through the legal process following the political change on August 5 last year. On May 28, the High Court acquitted him and his wife from a nine-year sentence in a case concerning the concealment of asset information and acquiring undeclared assets, also releasing them from the fine.
Tarique Rahman was originally arrested in March 2007 but was released in September 2008. Since then, he has been residing in London for medical treatment.
