Dhaka, Jun 04 (V7N) – The national budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year will be passed in Parliament on June 22, said Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed. He made the announcement while speaking to reporters after attending a meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Government Procurement at the Secretariat on Wednesday (June 4).
Dr. Salehuddin noted that although a 10-day Eid-ul-Azha holiday will begin on Thursday (June 5), the long break will not negatively impact the economy.
“The Eid holidays will not cause any disruption. We will review public and expert feedback on the budget after Eid,” he said. “The final version of the budget will be passed on June 22, incorporating relevant suggestions and opinions.”
The Finance Advisor formally unveiled the proposed national budget on June 2, marking the first budget of the interim government and his debut budget presentation. The total size of the proposed budget stands at Tk 7,90,000 crore, which is Tk 7,000 crore less than the original budget of the current fiscal year (Tk 7,97,000 crore).
This marks the first time in Bangladesh’s history that a proposed budget is smaller than the preceding year’s, indicating a more restrained fiscal approach.
The budget will come into effect on July 1, following the issuance of a Presidential Ordinance.
Key highlights of the proposed budget:
-
Total expenditure: Tk 7,90,000 crore
-
Revenue target: Tk 5,64,000 crore
-
Budget deficit: Tk 2,26,000 crore (3.62% of GDP)
The government aims to strike a balance between fiscal discipline and economic stability, while maintaining a focus on development, employment generation, and inflation control, officials said.
