Dhaka, May 12 (V7N) – The investigation report against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three others, accused of involvement in the July-August mass uprising, has been formally submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal.
This marks the first investigation report filed against Sheikh Hasina in connection with the July 1999 massacre, which has been described by prosecutors as a crime against humanity.
The investigation agency of the tribunal submitted the report to Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam on Monday morning (May 12). Alongside Sheikh Hasina, the report implicates former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam had previously announced on Facebook (May 9) that the tribunal’s investigation agency would submit the report on May 12. He confirmed that once the report is officially received, the tribunal will proceed to file formal charges, thereby launching the formal trial process.
Earlier, on February 18, a three-member tribunal headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder directed the completion of the investigation by April 20. The order came in response to the case filed against Sheikh Hasina for her alleged role in the 1999 genocide, which resulted in numerous deaths and widespread violence.
The submission of this investigation report is a significant development in the tribunal’s proceedings and is expected to set the stage for one of the most high-profile trials in the country's recent history.
