Dhaka, Oct 04 (V7N)- Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and opposition leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said there is no need for a government if it cannot ensure peace and security for the people.

“If the people cannot sleep peacefully, what is the need for a government?” Shafiqur Rahman said while inaugurating a nationwide dengue prevention awareness week at Madhubagh Ground in the capital on Sunday.

He expressed concern over the law and order situation in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country, saying public institutions, including the health sector, had suffered significant damage.

The Jamaat leader also criticized the case filed against retired Major General Akhtaruzzaman, a Jamaat-e-Islami parliamentarian, over an incident at the airport. He described the case as “false” and claimed that Akhtaruzzaman had not assaulted anyone.

Shafiqur Rahman said Akhtaruzzaman represented not only Jamaat-e-Islami but also people who were suffering and oppressed. He urged citizens at home and abroad not to take the incident lightly.

Questioning the state of healthcare services, he said public representatives also face questions when medical institutions fail to provide necessary treatment and services to citizens.

He also alleged that corruption was taking place at different levels and warned that his party would not remain silent if public money was misappropriated.

Speaking about dengue, Shafiqur Rahman said the situation should be treated as a serious public health concern. He said Jamaat-e-Islami had undertaken awareness programs and would work to help prevent the spread of the disease.

Addressing the government, he said, “I will wake you up by pushing you,” while calling for stronger action to ensure public safety and essential services.

Shafiqur Rahman further said that if the government was unable to provide security and peace, responsibility should be handed over to those capable of doing so.
