CHATTOGRAM, June 14, (V7N) – Leader of the Opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman stated that the opposition's response to the budget is a natural practice of democracy. "This exemplifies the essence of democracy. What is there to be upset about?" he remarked, speaking as chief guest at the 11-party unity divisional general meeting at the historic Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram this afternoon.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman noted that when people see the government sincerely working to fulfill their aspirations, they will commend it. Conversely, when they observe that the government is disregarding and disrespecting the will of 70 percent of the electorate, they will not remain passive, he added. LDP Chairman Dr Colonel Oli Ahmed Bir Bikram addressed the function as the key speaker, while Opposition Chief Whip and NCP Convener Nahid Islam MP delivered a special guest address.
Dr Colonel Oli Ahmed called for a decisive response to any anti-national conspiracies and foreign interference, as well as effective measures to manage the law and order situation in the country. He noted that long-standing dictatorship has led to moral decay, societal division, and a crisis in good governance within both society and the state system. To address these challenges, he emphasized reinforcing human values, morality, and compassion through mosques, temples, educational institutions, and social organizations.
Opposition Chief Whip and NCP convener Nahid Islam said, "We intended to commend your budget. However, it remains unclear how much funding has been allocated for the welfare of the people, as it appears that opportunities have been created for partisan spending instead." His remarks pointed to opposition concerns over budget transparency and allocation priorities.
The event was presided over by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Shahjahan, while Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis Ameer Shaikhul Hadith Allama Mamunul Haque, Bangladesh Khilafat Movement Ameer Maulana Habibullah Miyaji, and JAGPA Vice President Engineer Rashed Pradhan also attended the program. The divisional general meeting brought together leaders from multiple opposition parties to discuss national issues and coordinate their stance on the government's budget.
