Dhaka, Feb 16 (V7N) — Tarique Rahman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), won both Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6 constituencies in the 13th National Parliament election. According to Bangladesh law, a candidate elected to more than one seat can retain only one. Tarique Rahman will keep Dhaka-17 and vacate Bogra-6, the Election Commission (EC) confirmed on Monday.

Legal Context

  • Section 19(1)(b) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO): A person may contest and be elected from multiple seats in the same general election.

  • Section 19(2): If elected from more than one seat, the candidate must notify the EC in writing within 30 days after the gazette publication which seat they intend to retain.

If the decision is not submitted within the stipulated period, the EC will act according to the law, and the other seat(s) will be declared vacant, triggering a by-election.
