Dhaka, Feb 16 (V7N) — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has welcomed the opposition’s decision to form a shadow cabinet, party Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters outside the party’s office in Gulshan, he said the Bangladesh Election Commission is mandated to conduct parliamentary and presidential elections. As there is currently no Speaker or Deputy Speaker, he noted that the Chief Election Commissioner will administer the oath to members of parliament on Tuesday.

Reform Council Oath Issue

Regarding the Constitution Reform Council, Salahuddin Ahmed said the Chief Election Commissioner does not have authority under the existing constitution to administer its oath. He added that such a process would require constitutional provisions specifying who is empowered to administer the oath.

‘Challenges Across All Sectors’

Another BNP Standing Committee member, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, said the country faces challenges across multiple sectors, claiming that systems including the economy, education and healthcare are under strain.

He also said he remains unclear about the specific responsibilities of newly appointed ministers.
