Dhaka, Jan 16 (V7N) — A civic mourning ceremony is underway in the capital to pay tribute to former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. The formal proceedings began at 3:05 pm on Friday at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Manik Mia Avenue, with a recitation of the Holy Quran.

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman and members of Khaleda Zia’s family attended the ceremony, along with senior BNP leaders, Standing Committee members, and diplomats from various countries stationed in Bangladesh. Invitations had been sent in advance, and guests began arriving from around noon.

Security around the venue has been tightened by law enforcement agencies, while leaders and activists of various BNP bodies and associate organizations are overseeing the discipline and smooth conduct of the event.

The organizers emphasized that the ceremony would maintain a solemn and formal tone. No political leaders will speak from the stage; instead, only prominent professionals, researchers, religious representatives, and leading figures of the country will share their thoughts on Khaleda Zia’s life and contributions.

Civil society described the event as an “occasion of homage and silent presence” and instructed participants not to take selfies, clap, or stand during the ceremony to maintain its dignity and solemnity.
