Dhaka, Oct 19 (V7N) – State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam today said measures will be taken to implement a proposal for constructing modern flats or apartments to resolve the accommodation crisis faced by cleaners.
He also assured that necessary initiatives would be taken to provide employment opportunities for educated and unemployed youth from the cleaners' families.
The state minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an event held this afternoon to distribute financial assistance to Telugu and Kanpuri-speaking cleaners' families under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on the occasion of Durga Puja. The assistance, provided on behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was distributed during two separate events held at the cleaners' residential quarters in Dayaganj.
Shahe Alam said under the Prime Minister's special humanitarian directive—aimed at sharing the joy of the Sharadiya Durga Utsab (Durga Puja) with all—an assistance of Taka 2,000 was provided to each of the 680 Telugu and Kanpuri-speaking cleaners' families. Additionally, special grants were given to two local temples, he said, outlining plans to construct 17 new buildings across DSCC, including two new buildings in Dayaganj.
The state minister said the government has arranged free medical treatment for cleaners as well as a one-time assistance of Taka 4 lakh in case of a cleaner's death. He said the government is working to ensure that cleaners can live with dignity and enjoy equal rights.
In his remarks, DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam highlighted various initiatives taken by the city corporation for the welfare of cleaners and extended his Durga Puja greetings to all.
