Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order on Monday, accepting a naraji petition (petition of dissatisfaction) filed by the plaintiff. The court also set November 10 to file the investigation report.
According to the case documents, Sifat was shot and killed when police allegedly opened fire on protesters in the Mirpur-10 area on July 20, 2024. His father Kamal Hawlader filed the case on August 15, 2024, with Mirpur Model Police Station against 22 people, including Sheikh Hasina. Police on May 28, 2026, filed the charge-sheet against 26 people.
The court's decision to order a further probe comes after the plaintiff expressed dissatisfaction with the police investigation. The naraji petition is a legal mechanism that allows a complainant to challenge the adequacy of a police investigation or charge-sheet. The PBI, as a specialised investigation agency, will now conduct a deeper inquiry into the circumstances of Sifat's death.
The July Mass Uprising of 2024 was a student-led movement against the Awami League government that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of protesters. Following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, numerous cases were filed against her and other officials of the previous government for alleged human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances. The current government has committed to ensuring justice for the victims of the uprising.
