DHAKA, Sept 01, 2026 (V7N) – The government expects 10 LNG laden cargos to arrive in the country to ease the current crisis with officials saying procurement deal for eight of them were finalized by now and hectic efforts are underway to manage the rest two.

"We have confirmed the arrival of eight cargos so far and the tender process for the remaining two is underway," Petrobangla director AKM Mizanur Rahman told BSS here today.

He added the tender documents received for the ninth cargo would be opened tomorrow for scrutiny while the bidding process for the remaining one was underway.

According to the Petrobangla official, most of these cargos were carrying the crucially needed liquefied natural gas (LNG) which was procured from spot market with remaining volume was bought under previously signed long and short term agreements.

Mizanur Rahman said the government brought six cargoes of LNG in August, while nine cargoes came in July.

The official said the two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) in Maheshkhali were currently supplying 711 mmcfd gas to the national grid.

The national gas grid was now getting 2329 mmcfd with rest 1618 being supplied through domestic sources.

According to officials the officially estimated minimum gas demand is 3,800 million cubic feet per day (MMcfd).

BNP's acting secretary general, Prime Minister tarique Rahman's adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, meanwhile, assured that normal gas supply across the country was expected to be restored by the first or second week of September.

He, however, reminded people that Bangladesh's energy supply was affected by the ongoing global energy crisis due to the US-Iran war and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Rizvi said the premier was taking measures to address the energy crisis, allocating Tk 400 billion from the budget for the energy and power sector to resolve the gas shortage.

Referring to the technical problems at one of the two FSRUs in Maheshkhali, he said the faults at the plant were already repaired, enabling it to start the regasification process.

"Normal gas supply will be ensured by the first or second week of September, and electricity will also be available. We are already seeing some (positive) indications about that," he said.
