Manikganj, Aug 31 (V7N) – Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain today said the previous fascist government embezzled crores of taka by purchasing medical equipment far beyond actual requirements, leaving expensive machines unused due to a lack of manpower and technicians, with no option now but to sell them to scrap dealers.

"There are no manpower or technicians, yet equipment worth crores of taka has been purchased and left unused. Now there is no option but to sell these machines to scrap dealers," he said while addressing a meeting at the conference room of the District Commissioner's Office in Manikganj.

The meeting was organized by the Manikganj district administration to coordinate overall law and order, development and public welfare activities. Food Minister Afroza Khanam attended as the special guest.

Mentioning that honesty and accountability would be ensured in procurement in the health sector, he said hospitals must ensure quality food for patients, while doctors and nurses must behave with patients in a humane, sincere and courteous manner. He said the quality of healthcare services must be improved in every area. "We have to implement our 'zero tolerance' policy against corruption," he added.

Sakhawat said there would be no compromise in the fight against illegal drugs. Those involved in drug trading, as well as those who provide shelter to drug dealers, must be brought to justice, he said. "Drug abuse must be eliminated at any cost," he said.

The minister's remarks come as part of the government's broader anti-corruption campaign, which has uncovered extensive irregularities in various sectors. The health sector has been a particular focus, with ongoing efforts to recover misappropriated funds and streamline procurement processes.

Manikganj-1 constituency lawmaker S A Jinnah Kabir and Manikganj-2 constituency lawmaker Moinul Islam Khan, among others, spoke at the meeting, which was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Nazmun Ara Sultana.
