Dhaka, Aug 29 (V7N) – The Meteorological Department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall over Sylhet, Mymensingh, Rangpur and Chattogram divisions and the adjoining upstream areas during the next three days, according to a Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) report.
A low-pressure has formed over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coastal areas, which may move west-northwestwards, the report said.
According to the report, all major rivers across the country are currently flowing below the Danger Level. However, during the last 24 hours, the water levels of the Manu, Dhalai and Khowai rivers in the northeastern Sylhet division have risen.
The water levels of these rivers may rise further over the next 24 hours and remain steady for the subsequent two days. During this period, the Manu, Phafai and Khowai rivers may flow above danger level at Rabiganj and Moulvibazar districts.
During the last 24 hours, the water levels of the Gomti, Muhuri, Selonia and Feni rivers in the eastern and southeastern Chattogram divisions have also risen. The water levels of these rivers may rise rapidly over the next 24 hours and are expected to fall on the third day.
During the last 24 hours, the water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna basin remained steady and may rise in four days, a day after tomorrow. Meanwhile, the water levels of the Surma-Kushiyara basin in the northeastern region have risen and may continue to rise over the next three days.
Authorities have advised residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant as the rainfall may cause localized flooding and river levels to rise. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre is monitoring the situation closely.
