Dhaka, Aug 29 (V7N) – State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam today said the government is working in a planned manner to meet the expectations of the people, aiming to establish a well-planned and sustainable system in the power and energy sector.
The state minister made the remarks after paying homage at the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, accompanied by leaders of the BNP's Mokamtala upazila unit of Bogura district.
He said the government's goal is to establish a well-planned and sustainable system in the power and energy sector, taking into consideration the needs of the people and the country's overall development.
Welcoming the newly inducted leadership of the party, he calleNAd upon them to play a responsible role in maintaining unity and discipline and working for the welfare of the people.
Speaking to journalists, the state minister addressed various issues including the country's ongoing power and energy situation, local government elections and the formulation of regulations concerning e-rickshaws.
Regarding the country's power and energy situation, Mir Shahe Alam said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would present the government's short, medium and long-term plans for the power and energy sector through Parliament. The comments come as the government works to address persistent power shortages and rising energy costs that have affected industrial production and daily life .
On local government elections, he said fair and participatory elections are important to further strengthen local government institutions. He said the local government elections would be completed within the current fiscal year (2026-2027), with elections to 61 municipalities and the city corporations of Rajshahi, Barishal, Sylhet and Gazipur scheduled to be held on December 26, 2026 .
Mir Shahe Alam also addressed the formulation of regulations concerning e-rickshaws, which have become a popular mode of transport in cities and towns but have raised safety concerns. The government has been working on a policy framework to regulate the sector amid rising road accidents involving e-rickshaws .
The state minister said the government's each initiative is aimed at ensuring people's welfare, good governance and accelerating the country's development. He urged all concerned to work responsibly and in a coordinated manner.
