Dhaka, Aug 24 (V7N) – National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam's granddaughter Khilkhil Kazi today called upon the people to uphold the poet's ideals of humanity, communal harmony and equality, saying Nazrul always placed humanity above religious divisions.
She made the remarks at a discussion on the life and works of Kazi Nazrul Islam after placing a floral wreath at the poet's grave on the Dhaka University (DU) campus this morning.
"Kazi Nazrul Islam taught us how to love people and stand beside them. He showed us that humanity is the ultimate truth above all religions—a principle we must always remember," she said.
Recalling Nazrul's activism during the British colonial period, Khilkhil said the poet, while in good health, travelled across Bangladesh with his harmonium, songs and poetry, inspiring people to stand against oppression and injustice. "He called upon everyone to resist oppression and injustice. He gave us strength. Decades after his death, we have not forgotten him; we still hold him deeply in our hearts," she added.
Khilkhil Kazi also highlighted Nazrul's deep affection for Bangladesh, saying his return to the country in 1972 was driven by his profound love for the people and the land. She said this bond inspired his family to remain in Bangladesh.
"National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam belongs to the Bengalis of both countries; he cannot be divided by borders. That is why he declared all religions equal," she said.
Recalling Nazrul's efforts to promote communal harmony, she said the poet used his literary works to bridge divisions between Hindus and Muslims and emphasise their unity. "If we truly love our National Poet, we must uphold his legacy," she said.
She urged people to honour Nazrul by incorporating his teachings into their daily lives and promoting his message of humanity, equality and communal harmony.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam, Pro-Vice-Chancellors, teachers and officials, among others, were present at the event.
