The minister stated that these preliminary steps are aimed at ensuring the electoral process remains entirely free and neutral. During his address to the House, Minister Alamgir emphasized that the administration is fully committed to organizing a credible, transparent, and highly participatory local government election. He assured lawmakers that the Election Commission is actively working within the legally required timeline to establish all necessary administrative arrangements. Shifting focus to electoral modernizations in response to an inquiry from NCP lawmaker Abul Hasnat of Cumilla-4, the minister revealed that the EC has successfully debuted a specialized, IT-driven postal ballot registration portal. This digital framework was created specifically to accommodate and streamline the voting process for non-resident Bangladeshis living overseas. He noted that the implementation of this technology marks a significant step forward in making national voting more inclusive for the diaspora.
The minister confirmed that this tech-supported postal voting system will remain active and be utilized during the next general election cycle. Furthermore, he noted that the EC is dedicated to scaling up the platform's infrastructure to accommodate the highest possible number of expatriate citizens. The long-term goal of this expansion is to effectively safeguard and honor the constitutional voting rights of Bangladeshi laborers and professionals residing across the globe.
In a separate segment of the parliamentary session, opposition Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Abdul Karim, representing Gaibandha-2, raised a question regarding potential financial adjustments for grassroots public representatives. Replying directly to this, Fakhrul Islam clarified that the government does not currently harbor any plans to raise the monthly salaries or administrative allowances for Union Parishad chairmen and general members. He indicated that the existing compensation structures for these local government officials will remain unchanged for the time being.
