DHAKA, April 20 (V7N) — Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood informed Parliament today that the country’s government and private power plants currently owe a total of Tk 52,300.88 crore in outstanding bills, including electricity imports.

Breakdown of outstanding bills

Petrobangla gas arrears: Tk 11,634.06 crore

Electricity imports from India: Tk 3,891.55 crore

Capacity & fuel payments to gas/fuel oil IPPs: Tk 17,357.68 crore

Coal prices & capacity payments (joint venture & IPP coal plants): Tk 15,452.91 crore

Government-owned power companies (capacity & fuel arrears): Tk 5,623.03 crore

Hauling charges: Tk 198.94 crore

The minister also revealed that the total bank loans taken by power plants stand at Tk 1,49,311.26 crore.
Parliamentary context

The disclosure came in response to a starred question from ruling BNP lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain (Dhaka‑18), who asked whether there are any outstanding bills of government or private power plants.
