DHAKA, Feb 12 (V7N): In a closely fought contest across 190 polling centres, Paddy Sheaf candidate Anindya Islam Amit secured victory in the Jessore Sadar constituency, defeating his nearest rival by 7,894 votes.
According to the latest results, Amit received 173,023 votes, while his closest contender, Md. Abdul Kader of the Scale symbol, polled 165,129 votes.
The constituency, comprising Jessore Sadar upazila (excluding Basundia Union), has a total of 613,460 registered voters — 307,549 male and 305,901 female. Voter turnout was reported to be spontaneous from the early hours of polling across all 190 centres.
Throughout the day, a neck-and-neck contest was observed between the two leading candidates. Local political activists from both camps remained active, reflecting the competitive nature of the race. Observers noted that the narrow margin underscores the intensity of the electoral battle in the constituency.
Following the announcement of results, supporters of the winning candidate brought out celebratory processions in Jessore town.
In his immediate reaction, newly elected Member of Parliament Anindya Islam Amit described the victory as a reflection of the people’s aspirations and expressed gratitude to voters for their support.
