SAVAR, May 13, (V7N)– Workers of GK Garments today blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway at Birulia in Savar, located on the outskirts of the capital, demanding the immediate payment of their outstanding dues.
Eyewitnesses reported that the garment workers initiated the road blockade around 10:30 am, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill.
According to Md Jewel Mia, the officer-in-charge of Savar Police Station, a significant traffic congestion quickly formed on both sides of the highway as a result of the blockade.
Upon receiving information about the situation, a joint contingent, including members of the Bangladesh Army, promptly arrived at the scene and urged the protesting workers to clear the road.
Normal vehicular movement was reportedly restored around 11 am after the joint forces provided assurances to the workers.
Meanwhile, authorities at the GK Garments factory stated that the payment of April's salaries was scheduled for today, Tuesday. However, due to unforeseen complications, the payment could not be processed, and a new date of May 18th has been set for the wage disbursement.
Rafiqul Islam Sujan, president of the Bangladesh Garments and Industries Workers Federation, has called for the swift clearance of the workers' payments.
