PABNA, July 23 (V7N) — A madrasa teacher in Pabna has been accused of brutally beating a 13-year-old student with a bamboo stick and iron rod after allegedly accusing him of stealing.
The incident reportedly took place on Monday (July 20), but it came to public attention after a video of the alleged assault went viral on social media on Tuesday (July 21) afternoon.
The accused teacher, identified as Sohanoor Rahman Sohan, 25, teaches at Jamiatus Sunnah Residential Hafezia Madrasa in Pirpur village under Bharara Union of Pabna Sadar Upazila.
The injured student, Mahfuzur Rahman, 13, is the son of Sagar Hossain from Ganir Mor Newpara area of Dinajpur Sadar.
According to local residents, the teacher repeatedly beat Mahfuzur with a stick and iron rod on Monday and Tuesday after accusing him of theft. At one stage, the student was expelled from the madrasa.
After learning about the incident, angry locals went to the madrasa around 7pm on Tuesday and allegedly assaulted the teacher. They later detained him and handed him over to police after calling the national emergency service 999.
Pabna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tarikul Islam said the accused teacher and the injured student were brought to the police station with the help of locals. They were later admitted to Pabna General Hospital for treatment.
On Wednesday (July 22), a court sent Sohan to jail under Section 54 of the law. The injured student was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon and placed under the care of local resident Omar Faruk.
The OC said legal proceedings against the accused teacher are ongoing.
