Habiganj, Jan 12 (V7N) — The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), in an operation conducted by the 55 BGB Battalion, has seized Indian cosmetics, saris, and cumin seeds worth approximately Tk 1 crore 55 lakh while thwarting a smuggling attempt in Habiganj.

According to BGB sources, acting on confidential intelligence, a special patrol team of the Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB) took up a strategic position on Sunday (January 11, 2026) in the Jagdishpur Muktijoddha Chattar area along the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in Madhabpur upazila, about five kilometers inside Bangladesh from the border.

At around 5:00 pm, BGB personnel noticed a truck suspiciously moving along the highway, loaded with old paper cartons. The patrol team signaled the truck to stop and conducted a search. During the inspection, a large quantity of Indian cosmetics, saris, and cumin seeds was discovered, cleverly concealed beneath the cartons using an innovative method to evade detection.

The truck driver and those involved failed to produce any valid documents in support of the transported goods. As a result, the BGB immediately seized the consignment. The estimated seizure value of the recovered goods is approximately Tk 1 crore 55 lakh.

Lieutenant Colonel Md. Tanzilur Rahman, Commanding Officer of the 55 BGB Battalion in Habiganj, said that BGB remains firm in ensuring border security and preventing smuggling and drug trafficking. He emphasized that operations will continue relentlessly to keep border areas free from smuggling, and no leniency will be shown to those involved in such illegal activities.

He also highlighted the importance of cooperation from local residents in building social resistance against smuggling. The seized goods are in the process of being handed over to the Habiganj Customs authorities following legal procedures. Meanwhile, BGB intelligence activities have been intensified to identify and arrest the smuggling syndicate involved in the incident.
