Dhaka, Nov 10 (V7N) — The High Court has upheld the four parliamentary seats in Bagerhat and the five parliamentary seats in Gazipur, declaring the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to reduce the seats to three as illegal.

The verdict was delivered on Monday (November 10) by a High Court bench comprising Justice Shashank Shekhar Sarkar and Justice K. M. Zahid Sarwar Kajal.

Earlier, on September 16, during a preliminary hearing of a writ petition, the High Court had issued a rule questioning why the EC’s gazette notification reducing Bagerhat’s constituencies from four to three violated the law, and why it should not be declared beyond legal authority. The court had also sought reasons why the four parliamentary seats in Bagerhat should not be restored. The final verdict came after the conclusion of the hearing.
