Dhaka, Oct 08 (V7N)- Local Government Affairs Minister Dr. Abdul Moin Khan has said that various organizations, including UNICEF, the World Bank and WaterAid, will provide $2.1 billion in funding to ensure safe water for the people of Bangladesh.
The minister made the remarks after holding a meeting with a UNICEF delegation at the ministry on Thursday morning.
Dr. Moin said water-related issues can become a cause of death, and the government is therefore committed to ensuring a safe water supply for the country's 180 million people.
He said the government is taking coordinated initiatives to overcome the challenges of providing safe water across the country.
The minister also highlighted the growing water-related challenges, saying rivers are drying up due to upstream withdrawal of water, while salinity levels are increasing in water sources in the southern parts of the country.
UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh Gillian Melsop said UNICEF will work closely with the Bangladesh government to ensure access to safe and potable water for everyone.
