Rajshahi, Oct 07 (V7N)- Police have arrested a man in connection with an incident in which the Vice Chancellor of Rajshahi Medical University was allegedly forced to sign a resignation letter and his personal assistant was assaulted.

The arrested man has been identified as Abdus Salam. He was arrested on Wednesday after police examined CCTV footage from the incident, officials said.

Police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest others allegedly involved in the incident.

Earlier on Tuesday, the university's Vice Chancellor's personal assistant, Nazmul Hossain, filed a case with Rajpara Police Station against 50 to 60 unidentified people.

At a press conference, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mohd. Jawadul Haque said a group identifying itself as 'Apamor Chhatra-Janta' entered his office on the university campus as part of a procession.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the group accused him of being a supporter of the Awami League and alleged that university work was being awarded to contractors from Dhaka.

The complaint states that at one stage, the section officer and Nazmul Hossain were allegedly assaulted. The Vice Chancellor was subsequently forced to sign a pre-written resignation letter.

The complaint further alleges that computers' CPU units and emergency equipment were removed from the office during the incident.

It also alleges that electricity and internet connections across the campus were disconnected and that the university's main gate was locked after the incident.

Police said the investigation is continuing and further arrests may follow as those involved are identified.
