Dhaka, Oct 03 (V7N)- The aircraft carrying nuclear fuel for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has arrived in Bangladesh, with the fuel scheduled to be transported to the plant on Saturday under strict security measures.

The fuel arrived in Dhaka after a delay caused by difficulties in obtaining permission to use Pakistani airspace.

The shipment was originally scheduled to arrive on Thursday. Preparations had reportedly been completed by both Russia and Bangladesh, but the scheduled flight was cancelled after Pakistan did not permit the aircraft to use its airspace.

Meanwhile, officials involved with the Rooppur project said the safety valve of the power plant has been fixed and is now operational.

Fakir Mahbub Anam expressed hope that electricity generation at the plant would begin soon after completion of the necessary tests.

The fuel will be transported from Dhaka to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Ishwardi, Pabna, with heightened security arrangements.

The arrival of the fuel marks another step toward commissioning the first unit of Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant.
