Dhaka, Sep 30 (V7N)- Attacks, vandalism and arson were reported in the Mirpur-10 Gol Chattar area of the capital on Wednesday during a Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) eviction drive targeting illegal sidewalk encroachments.
The incident began in the morning when a DNCC mobile court arrived in the area to remove illegal structures and encroachments from the sidewalk. Police personnel accompanied the team.
At one stage, sidewalk traders reportedly became agitated and clashed with law enforcement personnel during the eviction operation.
Several vehicles, including vehicles belonging to the city corporation, were reportedly vandalised and set on fire during the incident.
Police personnel and members of the media were injured in the clashes, according to reports.
Eyewitnesses said tension remained high in the area after 12:15 pm. Police later fired tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd.
The sidewalk traders responded by throwing bricks at police personnel, eyewitnesses said.
According to those at the scene, the traders outnumbered the police officers present during the confrontation, forcing police personnel to retreat temporarily amid the brick-throwing.
The situation remained tense as law enforcement personnel attempted to bring the area under control.
