Dhaka, Sept 22 (V7N) – Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator and valiant Freedom Fighter Abdus Salam has announced that prompt steps will be taken to prevent erosion and conserve and modernize the bank of the historic pond in Bangshal in the old part of the capital, assuring that development work would begin soon once ownership or management of the pond is handed over to the city corporation.
He made the assurance at a view-exchange meeting with leaders of the Bangshal area Panchayat Committee held today at the administrator's conference room at Nagar Bhaban. Dhaka-7 constituency lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Hamid and representatives of local Panchayat Committees were present at the meeting.
During the meeting, Panchayat representatives mentioned the longstanding civic problems in the area, particularly issues related to drainage, water logging, waste management, cleanliness and transportation. They also highlighted the risks posed to surrounding buildings by the erosion of the banks of the old Bangshal pond and called for its immediate repair.
The DSCC administrator said, "Bangshal is a very historic area of Old Dhaka. The erosion of the bank of the old pond has placed nearby homes and buildings at serious jeopardy. There is a possibility of a major accident at any time. Considering the local needs and public interest, it is essential to conserve the pond."
He said, "Development work cannot be carried out using government funds unless the pond comes under the city corporation's authority. As soon as local elders hand it over to DSCC management, we will begin the work. The pond will be developed in the style of a modern park through beautification, lighting and greenery, so that people of all ages can comfortably spend time there."
The administrator said a technical team led by the DSCC chief engineer would soon visit the Bangshal pond to assess the overall situation on the ground. He also said DSCC was committed to preserving the heritage of Old Dhaka with the full cooperation of local representatives and Panchayat Committees.
Bangshal is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Dhaka, with a rich history dating back to the Mughal era. The area is home to several historic structures, including the Bangshal Pond, which has been a landmark for centuries. The pond has suffered from neglect and erosion in recent years, threatening nearby buildings and the local environment. The DSCC's initiative to conserve and modernize the pond is part of broader efforts to preserve Dhaka's cultural heritage while improving civic amenities for residents.
