Dhaka, Sep 06 (V7N)- Former interim government adviser Mahfuz Alam has warned that the aspirations of the July uprising will be defeated if the state becomes fascist.
He made the remarks in a post on Facebook on Sunday (September 6).
Mahfuz Alam said Bangladesh needs stability for the next several years, while investors and other stakeholders need confidence in the country's future. According to him, rebuilding the state now requires a two-pronged approach—maintaining trust and stability while implementing the state and economic reforms demanded by the July uprising.
He said maintaining stability and fulfilling the aspirations of July are not contradictory. Rather, the country needs to ensure the social and political advancement of the students and people who participated in the July movement.
He also called for a creative socio-political transformation to overcome what he described as the wounds caused by 16 years of repression and violence.
“Therefore, all unnecessary crises concerning trust and stability must be resolved together,” he said.
Mahfuz Alam said the country must continue its struggle to implement the aspirations of July through comprehensive reforms of the state and economy. He called for organizing efforts to establish a system free from discrimination.
“We must build as well as fight,” he said.
Warning against state fragility or failure, Mahfuz Alam said such a situation would ultimately mean defeat for the students and masses who took part in the July uprising.
