Dhaka, Aug 21 (V7N)- Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will take oath as the 23rd President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh today.

The state oath-taking ceremony will be held at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban at 7pm on Friday (August 21).

Acting Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Barrister Kaiser Kamal will administer the oath to the newly elected president.

The outgoing president, Prime Minister, Speaker, Chief Justice, cabinet members, chiefs of the three services, diplomats stationed in Bangladesh and other local and foreign dignitaries are expected to attend the ceremony.

The presidential election was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday (August 20). BNP-nominated candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir won the election with 255 votes in the direct ballot of MPs.

His only rival, Col. (retd.) Oli Ahmed, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and candidate of the 11-party alliance, received 88 votes.

After counting the ballots, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Chief Electoral Officer AMM Nasir Uddin officially declared Mirza Fakhrul the winner.

Later, a gazette notification confirming his election was issued by the Election Commission. The notification was signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.

With the oath-taking, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will formally assume office as Bangladesh’s 23rd president.
