Dhaka, Aug 05 (V7N) – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday inaugurated the July Uprising Memorial Museum, describing it as a lasting tribute to those who fought for democracy and a symbol of Bangladesh's commitment to preserving the history of the July Uprising.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday (August 5), the Prime Minister said Bangladesh would "never become a subservient state again," emphasizing the country's commitment to protecting its sovereignty and democratic values.
He alleged that during the previous government's rule, many people were subjected to enforced disappearances and killings over a prolonged period. Referring to the July Uprising, he described the movement as an epoch-making milestone in the democratic history of Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister said the July Uprising Memorial Museum would preserve the stories of courage and sacrifice for future generations while documenting what he described as the nature of the ousted regime.
He expressed hope that the museum would serve not only as a memorial to the events of 2024 but also as an institution reflecting the broader democratic journey of the Bangladeshi people.
Tarique Rahman also reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring transparent, impartial and credible trials in accordance with the law for cases involving casualties during the anti-fascist movement.
He announced that educational and other public institutions in local areas would be named after individuals who were martyred or killed during the past 17 years and the July Movement in recognition of their contributions.
Highlighting government support for those injured during the movement, the Prime Minister said July fighters are receiving free medical treatment at government hospitals. He added that those with critical injuries are being provided advanced medical care in countries including Thailand, Singapore, Türkiye and Russia under government arrangements.
According to the Prime Minister, 50 July fighters are currently undergoing treatment abroad.
He further said that more than 13,000 officially gazetted July fighters are receiving monthly honorariums directly into their personal bank accounts based on their designated categories.
The Prime Minister said the government remains committed to preserving the legacy of the July Uprising while supporting those affected by the movement and strengthening democratic institutions in Bangladesh.
