Dhaka, Aug. 2 (V7N) – Bangladesh has been experiencing a severe gas shortage for more than a week following a reduction in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, causing widespread disruption to transport, industries and households.
Long queues of compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles were seen at filling stations across the capital on Sunday (Aug. 2), as motorists struggled to refuel amid the ongoing supply crisis.
Drivers said the shortage has significantly affected their daily earnings and livelihoods, while industrial operators warned that production has been hampered due to inadequate gas supply.
The crisis has also disrupted household activities, with many residents reporting that they are unable to cook because of extremely low gas pressure.
Officials at several CNG filling stations said they have been unable to supply gas despite strong demand, as pipeline pressure remains too low to operate normally.
According to the Energy Division, one of the LNG terminals at Maheshkhali has remained out of operation after a fire, reducing the country's gas supply.
The government said terminal operator Excelerate Energy has sought time until Aug. 10 to restore operations at the affected facility.
Authorities also said efforts are underway to restart the operational boiler at another previously closed LNG terminal, expressing hope that gas supply will improve once it resumes operation.
