CHATTOGRAM, July 17,  (V7N) — Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said a detailed investigation is currently being carried out to find out the reasons behind the severe flooding in the southern Chattogram.

“Flooding may be attributed to railway lines, unplanned constructions, or barriers obstructing water flow. Additionally, the unusually heavy rainfall has also contributed to this disaster. We will implement necessary measures to mitigate future flood damage after a comprehensive review of all factors,” he said.

Amir Khasru was talking to reporters following his inspection to the damaged Dolu Canal in the Adhunagar Union of Lohagara Upazila in Chattogram this afternoon. He also distributed relief supplies to the flood-affected individuals.

The BNP leader noted that several hundred thousand people or more have been affected by floods. The government has already supplied rice to 40,000 families, dry food items and pulses to 75,000 families and distributed cooked meals to 40,000 families.

He emphasized that rehabilitation initiatives are also being carried out concurrently.

“Tin is being supplied to those whose homes have been damaged. To help recover from the losses, farmers will receive seeds, fertilizers, and other essential agricultural supplies to facilitate a swift return to farming,” he added.

The floods have also damaged numerous roads, he said, adding that the Local Government Department has been tasked with evaluating the extent of the damage. Following this assessment, repair work will commence promptly, he said.

City Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain, Alhaj Shahjahan Chowdhury, MP, Abu Sufian, MP, Ershad Ullah, MP, Enamul Haque Enam, MP, Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Shahadat Hossain Swadhin, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah, former General Secretary of city BNP Abul Hashem Bakkar, Member Secretary of city BNP Nazimur Rahman, and Member Secretary of South District BNP Lion Helal Uddin, among others, accompanied the Minister.

Earlier, the finance minister inspected the flood-affected regions in Dohazari of Chandanaish Upazila and Nalua Union of Satkania Upazila, where he distributed relief supplies. In the afternoon, the finance minister also provided assistance to the flood-affected residents in Saral Union of Banshkhali Upazila.
