Dhaka, Jun 27 (V7N) – Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman has emphasized the importance of resolving challenges facing the country's sports sector and ensuring greater participation in sports, saying the current government is placing significant importance on sports development.
He made the remarks while addressing the Olympic Day-2026 programme organized by the Bangladesh Olympic Association at the Army Stadium in Banani, Dhaka, on Saturday morning.
The Army Chief said that increasing the participation of Bangladeshi athletes in future Olympic Games would enhance the country's image and prestige on the international stage.
"We must engage ourselves in sports to protect the younger generation from the dangers of drug abuse," he said, stressing that sports can play a vital role in promoting healthy lifestyles and social development.
General Waqar-uz-Zaman also called for government support in pursuing an initiative to host an International Olympic Village in 2030, describing it as an important step toward strengthening Bangladesh's sporting infrastructure and international profile.
He further said that if athletes are provided with adequate opportunities, facilities and support, they will be able to compete successfully on the global stage and bring greater honor to the country.
The Army Chief reiterated the need for coordinated efforts to develop sports across the country, encouraging all stakeholders to work together to nurture sporting talent and build a stronger future for Bangladesh's athletes.
