SANGSAD BHABAN, May 3 (V7N) — Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani, paid a courtesy call on Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, at his office today. The meeting focused on strengthening parliamentary cooperation, economic ties, and the restoration of democratic processes in Bangladesh.
Strengthening Diplomatic Relations
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed highlighted the historical foundation of people-to-people contact and cultural ties between Bangladesh and Algeria.
UNGA Support: The Speaker specifically noted that the Algerian government’s support for Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly has significantly "rejuvenated" the friendly relations between the two nations.
Parliamentary Friendship Group: He emphasized the need for a parliamentary friendship group and the regular exchange of visits between parliamentary delegations to solidify diplomatic bonds.
Focus on Democratic Restoration
During the meeting, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed provided a sharp critique of the previous administration, noting that democracy had been endangered during the 16-year rule of Sheikh Hasina.
Reign of Terror: The Speaker mentioned that the suppression of opposition parties and extrajudicial killings had created a "reign of terror."
Legacy of Khaleda Zia: He described the sacrifices made by former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia during the struggle for democracy as "unforgettable in history."
Recent Elections: The Speaker asserted that the people of Bangladesh have recently regained their democratic rights through a fair franchise. In response, Ambassador Saidani remarked that the Algerian government and people greatly appreciated the recent "free and fair" national parliamentary election.
Economic and Technical Cooperation
The two leaders exchanged views on several key sectors for mutual progress, including:
Industry & Trade: Discussions covered the shipbuilding industry, garment exports, and energy security.
Technical & Educational Aid: Cooperation in technical assistance and educational exchange programs were identified as priority areas.
Sports: Both parties expressed interest in enhancing sports-related diplomacy.
