Dhaka, Apr 23 (V7N) — A nationwide measles vaccination campaign is underway for the fourth consecutive day, but hospitals across Bangladesh are reporting a steady rise in patients with measles symptoms, raising concerns among health officials.

Hospitals under pressure

At Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, new patients are being admitted daily, with 125 people currently undergoing treatment.

The situation is particularly severe in Chapainawabganj, where:

  • 35 new patients were admitted on April 22

  • 23 more patients were admitted by Thursday morning

  • A total of 909 patients have received treatment so far at the district hospital

Authorities say the situation is worsening due to the continuous influx of patients, prompting the opening of two dedicated isolation wards for measles treatment.

Rising cases in other districts

At Pabna Sadar Hospital:

  • 23 new patients were admitted in the last 24 hours

  • 62 patients are currently receiving treatment

Similar increases in measles cases have been reported in divisions including:

  • Barisal

  • Sylhet

  • Mymensingh

  • Khulna

  • Chittagong

Broader health concern

Health officials noted that both children and adults are now আক্রান্ত (affected), complicating the situation further. In many hospitals, patient numbers have exceeded ward capacity, even in specialized measles units.

Experts warn that the increasing infection rate, especially among children, is heightening public health risks despite the ongoing vaccination drive.

Outlook

Authorities continue to urge vaccination and preventive measures, but the growing number of cases suggests that containment remains a significant challenge in the coming days.
