Dhaka, Mar 04 (V7N) — The government is set to launch a 50 million tree plantation program starting next May, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo announced on Wednesday (March 4).
The minister made the statement after a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat in the morning.
Abdul Awal Mintoo said the government plans to plant 50 million trees annually as part of a long-term environmental strategy. He noted that one of the key objectives of the initiative is to strengthen Bangladesh’s engagement in carbon trading mechanisms through expanded afforestation.
He further informed that the Prime Minister was briefed on the ministry’s broader plan to achieve a target of planting 250 million trees over the next five years. According to the minister, the Prime Minister provided necessary guidance to ensure the successful implementation of the program.
Officials say the initiative is expected to contribute to climate resilience, environmental protection, and sustainable development goals, while also positioning Bangladesh more actively in global carbon credit markets.
