Dhaka, Feb 26 (V7N) — The government has decided to waive agricultural loans of up to Tk 10,000, including interest, in the grain, crop, fisheries and livestock sectors. The decision will cover about Tk 1,550 crore, benefiting roughly 1.2 million farmers across the country.

Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani disclosed the information at a press briefing following the first formal cabinet meeting held on Thursday (February 26).

The move comes in line with a key election pledge made by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman ahead of the 13th National Parliament election, promising to waive small agricultural loans after forming the government.

During the briefing, a journalist asked whether a farmer who borrowed Tk 10,000 but now owes Tk 14,000 including interest would receive a full waiver. In response, the Cabinet Secretary said the entire liability would be waived.

Nasimul Gani also recalled that during the government of Khaleda Zia (1991–1996), both principal and interest on agricultural loans up to Tk 5,000 had been waived, drawing a historical parallel to the current decision.

Officials said detailed implementation guidelines are expected soon, outlining procedures for banks and financial institutions to execute the waiver.
