Dhaka, Dec 30 (V7N) — Chief Advisor to the Interim Government Professor Muhammad Yunus has declared three days of national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. He also announced a one-day general holiday on Wednesday, the day of her funeral.
The announcement came during his address to the nation on Tuesday (December 30).
“The entire nation is silent today in deep grief and sorrow,” Professor Yunus said. “The foremost leader of democratic politics in Bangladesh, former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, is no longer with us. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un.”
Expressing profound sorrow, the Chief Advisor said the country has lost “a great guardian” with her passing. On behalf of the nation, he conveyed heartfelt condolences to her family members, political colleagues, and millions of party leaders, activists, and supporters.
“I pray to Almighty Allah to grant us all the strength to overcome this irreparable loss,” he said.
Professor Yunus described Begum Khaleda Zia as a towering and glorious figure in Bangladesh’s political history, stating that her role in establishing democracy, multi-party political culture, and safeguarding people’s rights would remain etched in history.
“Her uncompromising leadership against tyranny and fascism repeatedly guided the nation out of undemocratic situations and inspired struggles for liberation,” he said.
Highlighting her legacy, the Chief Advisor noted that her long political journey, people-oriented leadership, and unwavering stance in protecting the independence and sovereignty of the country would always be remembered with deep respect.
“The vacuum created by the loss of such a far-sighted, patriotic, and principled leader can never truly be filled,” he added.
At this moment of national mourning, Professor Yunus urged citizens to pray for the forgiveness of Begum Khaleda Zia’s departed soul and called on everyone to remain united, calm, and vigilant.
“I urge all citizens to ensure that no one attempts instability or sabotage during this sensitive period. Discipline and responsibility from everyone are crucial,” he said.
Reiterating the government’s decision, the Chief Advisor said:
“I have declared three days of state mourning and a one-day general holiday tomorrow on the day of her funeral prayers. I humbly request everyone to maintain discipline in all mourning activities, including the funeral.”
Acknowledging the emotional state of the nation, he appealed for patience and cooperation to ensure the funeral and related formalities are conducted with dignity and order.
