Dhaka, Dec 10 (V7N)- Two student representatives serving as advisors in the interim government's advisory council are set to tender their resignations today, ahead of the announcement of the schedule for the 13th National Parliamentary Election. The advisors are Information Advisor Mahfuz Alam and Local Government Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan.
According to government sources, both advisors informed senior officials on Tuesday (December 9) about their decision to step down. Local Government Advisor Asif Mahmud is scheduled to hold a press conference at the Secretariat at 3 pm today (December 10), where he is expected to formally announce his resignation.
Sources said the matter of the two advisors’ resignation was discussed at a meeting held on Tuesday at the State Guest House Jamuna, attended by the Chief Advisor and several senior members of the advisory council. Many high-ranking officials and advisors expressed the view that the two student representatives should step down before the election schedule is announced, in order to maintain the neutrality and credibility of the interim government.
The interim government led by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus was formed on August 8, two days after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5 last year. Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmud were included in the government as representatives of the student leadership that spearheaded the July mass uprising.
Their expected resignation marks another major development in the ongoing political transition as the country moves closer to the national election.
