Dhaka, Nov 09 (V7N) — Commerce Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin has said that the government will approve onion imports if prices do not come down within the next four to five days.
He made the remarks during a press briefing at the Secretariat on Sunday (November 9) afternoon.
The advisor informed that around 2,800 applications for onion import have already been submitted. He clarified that import duties will not be reduced, but once import permits (IPs) are issued, the market will be flooded with onions, helping stabilize prices. However, he warned that action will be taken against those hoarding onions to manipulate the market.
Sheikh Bashiruddin noted that onion prices had remained stable for a long time, and the recent Tk 40–50 hike within five days was illogical.
Meanwhile, the Commerce Secretary expressed optimism that prices would start to decline within a week, as newly harvested onions are expected to enter the market soon.
