Dhaka, Nov 07 (V7N) — The Election Commission (EC) has amended several sections of the Representation of the People Order (RPO) ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, following recommendations from the Election Reform Commission.

Among the changes, the EC highlighted provisions on “voting under one’s own party symbol” and the authority to stop voting even in case of an alliance.

Despite objections from parties including the BNP regarding alliance symbols, deposits, and election expenses, the government issued the RPO ordinance amid the disagreements.

Speaking on the matter, Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said that while dialogue with political parties has not yet started, it may begin next week. Parties will be consulted on matters related to laws, rules, the electoral environment, law and order, and organizing fair elections.

He acknowledged that the EC has amended parts of the RPO independently but stressed that the changes were made in line with the recommendations of the Election Reform Commission. The gazette of the election code of conduct is awaited, and once received, discussions with parties will commence within a day.

Akhtar Ahmed also emphasized that electoral reforms are an ongoing process requiring timely action. While the commission can reconsider objections if found reasonable, meaningful changes require collaboration between the government, political parties, and the administration.

Commenting on dissent, he added that “dissent is not always competitive; it often complements the process.”
