Dhaka, Oct 05 (V7N) – Political parties have reached a consensus to hold a referendum alongside national elections to implement the July Charter, although they could not finalize the legal basis for the process.
The remarks came during the lunch break of the National Consensus Commission’s discussion with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy on Sunday. Party leaders said that the implementation process may involve constitutional orders, seeking the opinion of the Supreme Court, and forming a People’s Council. They also proposed including the referendum in the Election Commission’s RPO.
Earlier in the meeting, Commission Vice President Dr. Ali Riaz stated that Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has instructed the Commission to finalize the implementation process of the July Charter and submit a report before October 15.
He added that if a full consensus is not reached, the Commission will propose multiple implementation methods. The ultimate decision on implementation will rest with the interim government and political parties.
