Chattogram, July 26 (V7N) – The government has decided to procure three additional vessels for the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) in an effort to boost revenue from the maritime sector. The announcement was made by Shipping Advisor Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain during a visit to the KSRM Shipbreaking Yard in Sitakunda, Chattogram on Saturday afternoon.

“The government is taking this initiative to increase income and strengthen the country's shipping capacity,” the advisor told reporters following his inspection of ship recycling operations.

He further stated that 14 shipbreaking yards in Chattogram have already received the Green Shipyard Certificate in compliance with the Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships. “Several others are currently in the process of certification,” he added.

However, he issued a warning to non-compliant operators. “Those who fail to meet environmental and safety standards will be forced to shut down.”

Brigadier General Hossain acknowledged that many yards are still struggling to fully adhere to international regulations. He reassured shipbreaking industry stakeholders that the government is prepared to provide necessary support to facilitate compliance and improve industry standards.
