Jhalokathi, Sept 03 (V7N) — A 42-year-old farmer was killed by a lightning strike while planting rice seedlings in a field in South Chechri village of Kathalia upazila in Jhalokathi on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Md Delwar Hossain Khan, son of Md Harun Khan of South Chechri village. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
According to local residents and family members, Delwar was planting rice seedlings in his own field amid rain at around 11:45am when lightning suddenly struck. He collapsed at the scene and was later rescued by local residents. He died while being taken home.
Shahin Khan, a member of the local union parishad, confirmed the incident and said Delwar was working in the field when he was struck by lightning. Describing him as a hardworking man, he said the farmer’s sudden death had cast a pall of grief over the community.
Harun Chandra Pal, investigation officer at Kathalia Police Station, said police visited the area after receiving information about the incident. As the family had no complaint, the body was handed over to them for burial.
Meanwhile, the Kathalia upazila administration provided Tk 10,000 in humanitarian assistance to the bereaved family for burial expenses and other urgent needs.
Following instructions from Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Mokbul Hossain, Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Md Zobayer Hossain handed over the cheque to Delwar’s younger brother, Md Rubel Khan, who serves as a village police member.
The sudden death left the family in deep distress. Family members expressed their gratitude to the upazila administration for extending immediate assistance during the difficult time.
