New Delhi, Sep 07 (V7N)- A building collapse in Delhi's Satya Niketan area has raised fresh concerns over the safety of students living in private accommodations near Delhi University.
The building collapsed on Sunday, prompting teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Police to launch rescue and relief operations at the scene.
Satya Niketan is a popular residential area for Delhi University students, particularly those studying at or near the university's South Campus. With limited hostel facilities, many students depend on private paying guest (PG) accommodations and rented housing in the area, often at high rents.
Following the incident, questions have emerged over the safety and structural condition of such buildings.
Delhi Police has registered a case in connection with the collapse. The building's owner, Anand Bansal, is reportedly absconding.
According to reports, the building had been vacated about a year ago but was reportedly reopened as a PG accommodation facility two to three months ago. This has raised questions over how the building was allowed to be occupied again and whether proper structural and safety inspections were conducted before residents moved in.
The incident has renewed concerns about safety standards in privately operated student accommodations in Delhi. It has also brought renewed attention to the need for safe, affordable and properly regulated housing for Delhi University students.
