Gaza, Aug 24 (V7N)- Palestinians in Gaza are facing a growing burial crisis as continued Israeli attacks and the destruction of cemeteries have left families struggling to find places to bury their dead.
Although a ceasefire has formally been in place, attacks and casualties have continued in the besieged territory, according to reports by Qatar-based Al Jazeera.
Many destroyed cemeteries are no longer available for burials. As a result, Palestinians have been forced to bury relatives in gardens, tents, refugee camps, schools and hospital compounds.
The situation has also been complicated by the large number of people still missing. Many are believed to have died beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings. Since the ceasefire began in October 2025, families have continued discovering the remains of relatives in the ruins of their homes.
According to Gaza's Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, more than 40 cemeteries have been destroyed since the beginning of the war. Restrictions imposed on access to some of the remaining cemeteries have further reduced available burial space.
The displacement of Gaza's population has also affected previously designated burial grounds, while shortages of burial equipment have increased the difficulties faced by families. Each burial reportedly costs between $235 and $335.
Israeli attack kills one in central Gaza
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli attacks have continued.
At least one person was killed and two others injured in an Israeli attack near Salah al-Din Road in the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza on Sunday morning, according to reports by Wafa and Al Jazeera.
The attack came a day after an Israeli drone strike targeted members of the Al-Hasanat family in Deir el-Balah. One person was killed and several others were injured in that incident, according to the reports.
Gaza's Health Ministry says at least 1,286 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire was established last October. It says the overall Palestinian death toll from Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 2023 has exceeded 73,400.
13 Palestinians arrested in West Bank
Meanwhile, Israeli forces arrested 13 Palestinians, including a child, in the occupied West Bank on Sunday, according to Al Jazeera.
The arrests came amid reports of attacks by Israeli settlers in several parts of the West Bank. Settlers have reportedly burned homes and vehicles, cut down trees, destroyed crops and damaged irrigation infrastructure.
Palestinians were detained in areas including Bethlehem, Qalqilya and Ramallah, while reports of settler violence continued.
The latest developments have further raised concerns over the humanitarian situation in both Gaza and the occupied West Bank, where Palestinians continue to face displacement, destruction and restrictions amid the ongoing conflict.
