Herat, Apr 11 (V7N) – At least four people were killed and several others injured in a gun attack at a picnic spot in western Afghanistan, according to local officials and medical sources.

The attack took place in the Anzil district of Herat province on Friday. A spokesperson for the Taliban Interior Ministry said seven people were killed, while a local provincial official reported four fatalities. However, a doctor at a hospital in Herat claimed the death toll could be as high as 12, with another 12 people injured.

According to the Interior Ministry, unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire near the village of Deh Mehri, an area known for picnics and recreational gatherings. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Hospital sources said the victims belonged to the Hazara Shia Muslim community, who had gathered at a local shrine.

Reports by BBC News note that the Hazara community, a minority in Afghanistan, has frequently been targeted in previous attacks, raising concerns over their safety and security.
