Kyiv, Dec 15 (V7N) — After lengthy negotiations, Ukraine has abandoned its long-standing goal of joining NATO, but has secured assurances of security assistance from NATO member countries in the event of a major attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday. The announcement followed a five-hour meeting with US representatives in Berlin, NBC News reported.

The Russia-Ukraine war, now approaching its fourth year, was largely driven by Ukraine’s desire to join the Western military alliance. Russia has consistently opposed Ukraine’s NATO membership, citing threats to its border security and influence.

Under the new arrangement, although Ukraine will not become a full NATO member, the country has received guarantees of Article Five-like security from alliance members. This includes military and diplomatic support if Ukraine faces a significant attack.

Despite these assurances, skepticism remains among ordinary Ukrainians, who are anxious to see tangible results and the immediate implementation of a ceasefire. Analysts note that the decision represents a significant compromise in the ongoing negotiation process and may pave the way for renewed diplomatic efforts.

President Zelensky described the agreement as a step forward in stabilizing the conflict while maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
